Have you had a previous bad experience at a dentist that made you shy away from future visits? Does the mere idea of having a stranger working on your mouth make you cringe? Have you been ignoring a toothache because you would rather suffer with the pain than visit the dentist? You’re not alone; countless millions of people deal with dental anxiety. We understand this problem, and that is why we are proud to serve as your sedation dentist in McKinney. We want to help you relax!
Nitrous oxide is a colorless, non-flammable gas that, when inhaled, produces feelings of relaxation and happiness; it is sometimes referred to as “laughing gas.” The type of nitrous oxide that we use in dentistry is mixed with oxygen, so the risk of negative side effects is very low. In fact, even young children and pregnant women can take advantage of this type of sedation.
Administering nitrous oxide is simple. We’ll provide you with a nasal mask, and you’ll breathe in the gas. Almost immediately, your anxiety will begin to melt away as the nitrous oxide enters your system. Side effects of nitrous oxide are usually minor and may include tingling or a “heavy” sensation in the arms and legs.
You’ll remain conscious while you’re breathing in nitrous oxide, so you’ll still be able to respond to any questions or instructions that Dr. Lee issues. We can adjust your level of sedation throughout your procedure so you remain comfortable. Once your treatment is complete, the laughing gas will wear off very quickly. In fact, its effects dissipate so quickly that it will be safe for you to drive yourself home after your appointment.
The vast majority of patients who suffer from dental anxiety are excellent candidates for nitrous oxide sedation. However, that isn’t the only circumstance in which we might recommend it. Sedation may be right for you if:
It is important that you be upfront with your “dentist near me” about any allergies or medical conditions you have. If there is a significant risk that nitrous oxide may harm you, your dentist may recommend that you use a different type of sedation. For example, oral conscious sedation, which involves medication taken in pill form, is another technique that we can use to help patients stay calm during their appointments.
After you and Dr. Lee discuss your circumstances, medical history, and any concerns you have about sedation, she’ll develop a plan for carrying out your treatment in the gentlest, most comfortable way possible.
